Proper Graphic Design Guidelines for Calendar Printing   by Chelsea Nicole

In my many instances of having to print calendars, I have always followed several proper graphic design guidelines in poster printing. These guidelines have always proven to be really effective at making great looking print calendars for my purposes. As my gift to you, I am sharing these graphic design secrets for calendar printing, so that you may also create great graphic designs for your color calendars.

* Enhancing images – The most crucial part of calendar designs are its images. Particularly, the images for the 12 months of the year are the ones that require most attention. As a standard procedure in graphic design calendars, it is important for you to enhance all the images to make them look as best as possible. You can do this by using image enhancement software such as Adobe Photoshop. Usually people try to adjust the color values, lighting values as well as adjusting sharpness options and the overall dimensions of the image. Doing this gives that subtle improvement of quality that most photographs lack.

* Working with typography – Another important aspect of calendar design is its typography. Since all calendars will have numbers and letters in their design, it usually pays to focus as well on the style of the fonts. Your font styles must always match your theme, and the letters and numbers must blend in quite well with the overall layout. You must place them in an artistic sort of way into the calendar design so that they can be both be functional and aesthetic at the same time. In most cases, you will probably need to make your own font styles, or have a few interesting ones downloaded over the Internet.

* Adjusting for cuts, folds and holes -It is also important for a graphic design for calendars to have guide lines for the non-print features of the calendar. You must place lines where the folds will be located as well as the cuts and holes that will probably be needed when the calendar binding begins. By adding these guidelines early on in your calendar design process, you can at least avoid adding design elements to areas that will be affected physically by folds and cuts. This can save you a lot of time readjusting the layout to accommodate these extra features.

* Printing bleeds – It is also crucial for a calendar graphic design to have a printing “bleed”. These are basically extensions of the design beyond the set dimension for the layout. This is a standard operating procedure for prints so that there is some leeway for cuts and folds in printing. That is why it is important to add a quarter of an inch or so in all sides of your calendar layout.

If you adhere to these guidelines always in your calendar printing, you will undoubtedly have an easy time making your graphic design. So remember them well.
