Michigan Chevrolet Dealers Hear GM and LG to Build EVs Together; Electrification Moves Forward

General Motors officially signed contracts with LG Group to continue their growth toward electrification of GM vehicles. Michigan Chevrolet dealers learn that together GM and LG plan on working to bring more EV solutions to consumers.

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Chevrolet dealers have heard the official news that General Motors and LG Group teamed up to create even more electric vehicles (EVs) to be offered to their customers.

LG has already worked with GM as the battery cell supplier for two of GM’s vehicles, which are the Chevrolet Volt, mostly sold in the U.S., and the Opel Ampera that is available in Europe. With this agreement, LG is widening its portfolio as an automotive solution provider.

“Many solutions for tomorrow’s transportation needs may be available more quickly by building on our partnership strategy,” said General Motors Vice Chairman Steve Girsky in a GM Press Release. “Consumers benefit by getting the latest fuel-saving technology faster if we work with the best suppliers and we save time and money in the development process.”

The U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) has a mandate of 54.5 mpg by the end of the 2025 model year. As electric vehicles have no tailpipe emission and have no need for gasoline, EVs are expected to be very important to GM to reach the final CAFE goal.

Michigan Chevrolet dealers have learned that the GM and LG engineers will work on key components, vehicles structures and architectures. Aside from the Volt and the Aspera, future vehicles will be built from this new partnership, and the vehicles will be sold in many countries.

With more extended-range EVs available to consumers, there will be a wider variety of vehicles for them to choose from as there are only a couple EVs available as of now in the U.S. that carry a reasonable price tag.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is available at Michigan Chevrolet dealers as well as others across the country, and they are getting ready for the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Volt, which will be available by the end of 2011.
